"Delivering Europe’s first natural hydrogen project in Aragón and expanding activities across the EU"

Our contribution to the energy transition

The Earth produces large volumes of natural or “gold” hydrogen.
This source of clean energy is renewable.
Hydrogen is molecularly the lightest element in the Universe. To be trapped in the subsurface requires an excellent seal or cap-rock.
Helios Aragon's acreage in Spain has natural hydrogen proven at depth by previous exploration drilling.

Our Vision

Helios aims to produce the lowest cost and cleanest hydrogen before the end of this decade to accelerate Europe’s energy transition

NATURAL HYDROGEN…

Over 1 million tonnes recoverable volume in the Monzon Field alone (would satisfy 10% of Spain’s current usage for 20+ years)

Drilling rigs, processing facilities and skills proven over decades in the geothermal and natural gas industries

50 times lower CO2 than grey hydrogen which currently provides over 95% of the world’s hydrogen demand

Break-even cost of less than €1/kg (green hydrogen €4-€10/kg)

No intermittency and utilises 100% of installed capacity (wind turbines and solar only use around one-third of capacity)

The 4 production wells in the Monzon Field will provide the energy equivalent of 650 wind turbines and no water is required (green hydrogen production uses 9 litres of water for every kg of hydrogen)

Monzon will host Europe’s first natural hydrogen project with initial production before the end of this decade to supply new local industry, supporting hundreds of direct and thousands of indirect jobs, and compliment green hydrogen supply within Aragon’s Hydrogen Hub

Global Projected Hydrogen Production Cost 2060

Natural hydrogen will remain the lowest cost method of producing hydrogen long into the future.

Partnerships

We are establishing lasting relationships with proven partners to accelerate the growth of the natural hydrogen business in Europe, delivering the most competitive and sustainable clean hydrogen this decade.

Since inception in 2017, Helios has built strong partnerships with recognised international players in the natural hydrogen industry. Such stakeholders include universities, research institutes, industry bodies and government agencies in Spain, Belgium, France, Germany, Poland, The Netherlands, the broader European Union and the United Kingdom.

Helios has been working closely with industry-leading scientists at the Durham Energy Institute (University of Durham) and the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom. Further relationships are being developed in the European Union, in particular universities with a strong pedigree in engineering and earth sciences. There is significant cross-over between technologies in the geothermal and natural gas industries and the natural hydrogen industry. Indeed, natural hydrogen accumulations can be located and developed using existing skills, technologies and facilities.

In Spain, Helios is proud to be supported by the autonomous government of the Province of Aragon and the parties signed a Letter of Intent in August 2021 to progress the Monzon Natural Hydrogen Project to production. In May 2023, the project was designated as an “investment of regional significance” in the Parliament of Aragon.

In Europe, Helios is active in a number of policy areas and is working with the European Union, European Parliament and the European Council to ensure that appropriate legislation is in place to accelerate the commercialisation of natural hydrogen throughout the continent.
